How to reduce risk of burn injury in the home

Medical professionals who care for victims of burn injuries in Georgia recently took time to educate parents statewide on ways to reduce the risk of such injuries at home. The efforts were apart of Burn Awareness Week, and troubling statistics from recent years have confirmed the need for such efforts.

Data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2007 revealed that 145 Georgia residents died as a result of fires or burns. Of the fatalities, children under the age of 4 suffered five of them and another 15 individuals were younger than 19 years. Even though the number might not be overly alarming, additional data proves that children are especially at risk.

Georgia man sentenced for severely burning his girlfriend

A Georgia woman will be forced to the live the rest of her life treating severe burn injuries while her boyfriend will spend the rest of his life behind bars for inflicting them.

After a jury found him guilty of setting his girlfriend on fire during a dispute, a judge in Clayton County recently sentenced the 30-year-old man to 205 years in jail. The victim, and everyone on her side, was happy to hear that the man received such a stiff penalty for the heinous crime.

Atlanta mourns officer killed by drunk driver

Atlanta residents are mourning the loss of a veteran police officer after she was killed in an accident caused by an alleged drunk driver. The 46-year-old female victim worked for the Atlanta Police Department for 20 years. As the community remembered the woman for her service, Atlanta's mayor said the woman's death should remind residents to offer their respect to officers, who put their lives on the line every day.

The woman was struck late on a recent Tuesday night after she arrived on the scene of a one-car accident. After arriving on the scene, the officer was about to get out of her vehicle, but instead was hit by on oncoming car. The collision happened at the interchange ramp of Interstate 75 south and I-85 north. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Georgia man suffers burns from house fire

A 25-year-old man was admitted to a local hospital to be treated for burn injuries he sustained during a fire at a mobile home near a small Georgia town. Local fire crews continue to investigate what may have caused the mysterious blaze, which happened at a home located on the grounds of what used to be a junkyard.

Fire crews were tipped off about the fire just before 5 a.m. one day. When they arrived, they discovered the victim and another individual present just outside of the double-wide trailer, which was already engulfed in flames. The victim was transported to the hospital sporting what were considered first- and second-degree burns on his arms and legs. Emergency crews withheld the victim's identity immediately after the incident.

Drivers need to be vigilant of motorcycles

Following a recent motorcycle accident in Lee County, Georgia, state law enforcement is reminding motorists to be especially mindful of motorcyclists, as one misstep could leave these individuals dead or seriously injured.

This is exactly what happened in the recent accident, when the driver of an SUV did not spot a motorcyclist and pulled out in front of him. A senior trooper for the Georgia State Patrol said the male motorcyclist was traveling south on Georgia Highway 3 while the SUV was heading north on the same road. Without spotting the motorcycle, the female driver of the SUV turned left into a supermarket parking lot, putting the SUV directly in the motorcycle's path.

Police officer collides with SUV, kills woman

Details from a witness are emerging about a recent collision between a member of the Georgia State Patrol and an SUV. The car accident claimed the life of a woman, who was married to a member of the Atlanta Braves staff, a Major League Baseball team.

While law enforcement works to reconstruct the accident and study what may have caused it, there is little doubt from a witness what sparked the fatal incident. At around 4:40 p.m., a witness saw the police cruiser traveling at a high rate of speed. The witness said he was concerned that the officer might hit another motorist on the road.

Georgia highway fatalities continue to drop

While car accidents claimed the lives of four individuals over the 2011 Christmas weekend in Georgia, there are still some signs that state roads have become safer with time.

The accident rate on Georgia highways has dropped for the last five years, and with the pace the state was on late into 2011, it was on track to see yet another drop. As of Dec. 19, 2011, there were 62 less traffic fatalities than there were at that time in 2010. In 2010, the state witnessed 1,244 highway deaths throughout the state, which plummeted 3.7 percent from 2009. In fact, this has been the trend since 2006, which followed a horrendous 2005, which set a record with 1,744 highway deaths.

Georgia woman injured by air bag

When you think about a car accident, you probably envision a collision between a car and another vehicle or a tree. One Georgia college student was almost fatally injured in a car accident, but it did not involve either of these scenarios. Instead the device that is supposed to keep her safe during a car accident seriously injured the woman.

While sitting at a traffic light back in April, the woman's driver and passenger side air bags randomly deployed. The deployment caused shrapnel to sever an artery in the woman's neck, nearly killing her. She eventually survived after being in intensive care for two weeks, where she underwent a number of surgeries.

Augusta man seriously injured in moped accident

Full-fledged motorcycles are not the only two-wheeled vehicles drivers need to pay special heed to on the roads. Smaller-scale versions of motorcycles, known as mopeds, are just as tough, if not harder, to detect out on the streets. Similarly, a car accident that snares one of these vehicles can cause very serious injuries.

This proved to be true for a man in Augusta, Georgia, who was riding a moped at the time of a motor vehicle accident. He suffered serious injuries as a result.

Driver ignores school bus warnings, strikes and kills teen

Due to the elevated risk they present, motorists should practice extra caution when operating around school buses. These vehicles make sudden stops and usually indicate that kids are nearby, many of whom may need to cross the street. Not even the flashing red lights and stop arm of one Georgia school bus were enough to stop a 51-year-old woman, who looked past these warning signs and struck and killed a teen.

The driver responsible for the accident was recently in court, where she faces reckless driving, failing to stop for a school bus and first-degree vehicular homicide charges. A judge did not set a bond for the woman, so she must remain county jail until her next court appearance.
